The White House said Monday that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has been "unable" to find a way to legally extend the now-expired federal COVID-19 eviction moratorium.
"To date, CDC Director Rochelle Walensky and her team have been unable to find legal authority for a new, targeted eviction moratorium," the White House said in a statement.
"Our team is redoubling efforts to identify all available legal authorities to provide necessary protections," the statement read.
The federal moratorium on evictions expired on August 1, following a ruling by the Supreme Court that found only Congress could extend the moratorium. The Biden White House had urged Congress to extend the ban at the last minute on Friday, but a deal was not reached, putting millions of Americans at risk of being evicted.
